New HSE first aid training arrangements

From 1 October 2009, HSE is introducing new arrangements to the first aid training regime. The new arrangements will provide that in order to comply with HSE regulations, first aiders provided by an employer in the workplace for the purposes of the regulatory requirements must hold a certificate of competence in either :-

  • first aid at work (‘FAAW’ –  reduced from a four-day to a three-day course), issued by a training organisation approved by HSE; or
  • emergency first aid at work (‘EFAW’ – a one-day course), again issued by a training organisation fully approved by HSE or a recognised Awarding Body of Ofqual/ Scottish Qualifications Authority eligible to award an accredited qualification in EFAW applying a training standard set by HSE.

HSE strongly recommend an annual 3 hour basic skills update following all courses, as skills can diminish if not updated yearly.

As an approved and registered training centre through the Health & Safety executive, Premier Training Services - Centre number 14/09, is fully accredited in order to offer the above training courses and would welcome the opportunity to provide assistance to all enquirers who may be unsure of what the above changes will mean to their businesses.
